Seaside sound scientists by Madelaine Empson

Cartoon hip-hop and dance band Seaside Sloths have been together for five years now.

“A few of us had bumped into each other at a radio station in Wellington and naturally gravitated towards each other a year or so later and began knocking together a few songs” the Sloths tell me.

“Once we’d made a few and thought they weren’t bad and the vibe was there, we had the ‘What are we’ conversation new bands have.”

The answer was sloths, but make it coastal.

“All being quite relaxed folk and living by the coast, the name and theme came about organically from that.”

Based in Kapiti, Seaside Sloths are James (bass, keys), Joe (guitar), Henry (samples), Tim (samples), Levon (drums), Isaac (vocals), and Jinz (vocals). With visual artists and producers amongst the bandmates, their designs are always eye and tree-catching, while their music is known for its coastal vibes blended with introspective lyrics and sloth-themed, punny titles. Their albums include Claws and Fear and Slothing in Sloth Vegas.

In their next gig, One Giant Leap for Slothkind, Seaside Sloths will drop lunar licks and interstellar basslines heavy enough to shake the craters of the Moon (Bar) on the 14th of November. It’s been a while since Neil Armsloth and Buzz Lightyear set theirs claw onto the surface of the Moon... some say the footage was faked. Others even claim it was shot in the Moon Bar green room. All we know is these slow-moving sound scientists are ready to blow the lid off the greatest cover-up in cosmic history with a night of undeniably real tunes. Put on your tinfoil hats, your dancing shoes, and get ready to stomp your two-toes, Pōneke.
