Our brand of sausage by Madelaine Empson
Have you heard the idiom ‘See how the sausage is made’? Zane Jarvie, one third of surreal sketch comedy circus trio Laser Kiwi, says it refers to how messy and complex the process of making a sausage can be. Or anything, really. Like, for example, a work in progress show.
Laser Kiwi is making a new sausage (series of shows) titled It’s a Sign. When I ask Zane what his three favourite sausages are, he replies, “Chorizo so yum so versatile. A cucumber (shaped like a sausage) fresh and crisp. And sausage dog so cute.”
That’s where the riffing on sausages stops because there’s (probably) not going to be any in It’s a Sign – Work in Progress #2. Instead, Laser Kiwi will be “playing with some very different ideas”. Considering they’ve involved everything from airborne cucumbers to jars of olives in their stage shenanigans, I’m curious as to what “different” looks like to Zane and Degge Jarvie and Imogen Stone.
“When you put it like that, from an audience perspective, the different ideas will probably seem well within our brand of different... so we should have said more of the same different!”
Adding the caveat that there will be no circus, “so no being angry about the lack of flips (not that any of us can flip)”, Laser Kiwi notes the shows are comically priced on an ascending scale on the assumption they’ll improve. It’s a Sign – Work in Progress #2 takes place smack bang in the middle of the series at Newtown Community Centre Theatre on the 17th of July.
