Home, I’m Darling by Madelaine Empson

Director Victoria Ross describes British playwright Laura Wade’s Home, I’m Darling as a witty, thought-provoking piece of theatre that explores feminism and asks the question, have we evolved since the 1950s? Were the good ol’ days really that good?

Running from the 19th to the 29th of November in the newly renovated Studio 73 on Main Street, this Greytown Little Theatre production has some “wonderfully funny moments and is such an engaging story – and the actors tell it so well”, Ross delights.

“I really liked the script. It’s so well written and it has humour and pathos and some of those beautiful quiet moments, which are such a joy to watch as an audience. Also, I knew I’d be able to cast it, which is really important in community theatre!”

With a 50s set and costume design, this prop-heavy play has been equally tricky and delightful to bring from the page to the stage. The community has been great with all the various bits and pieces they’ve loaned the company to use, Ross says, and the wonderful cast of six have risen to the challenge of “an awful lot of prop handling – especially Katie [Cooper], who plays the lead role of Judy. She’s a legend!”

Greytown Little Theatre chairperson John Gilberthorpe says it’s great to be presenting the first show in the upgraded and revamped Studio 73, an amenity designed for the wider community that is proving to be very comfortable for the theatre company’s actors and crew alike.

“Already, as we settle in, we are feeling ‘very at home’ and I’m sure the production of Home, I’m Darling will prove a fitting show for our opening.”
