Check out Local Library by Madelaine Empson

Under the direction of Conrad Newport, Peter Hambleton and Jude Gibson are having a great time rehearsing Dave Armstrong’s highly anticipated new comedy, Local Library – “a real winter heart warmer”, Jude delights.

“Two lonely people clash in the local library, leading to loads of laughs and some poignant moments as their relationship develops. The script is so clever, it’s easy to play the truth of the situation…”

Let’s bookmark that truth. At the heart of Local Library are Paul Homewood and Helen Nielsen, two people whose lives have narrowed in different ways. Paul is a conservative retiree filling his days with odd jobs for neighbours after the loss of his wife. Helen is a librarian approaching retirement who feels increasingly disconnected from her workplace, family, and community. When a dispute over rental magazines results in Paul being banned from his local library, Helen offers him a deal: if he wants his library privileges restored, he must read a book she recommends.

Dave says while the play may be a comedy, it is also a story about loneliness, connection, and the unexpected ways people can find common ground.

“In a time when public debate can feel increasingly divided, Local Library asks us to consider what happens when we choose curiosity and conversation over judgement.”

Peter raves about Dave’s delightful script, saying its “wit and clever craftsmanship land beautifully with us actors”.

“We’re also loving working with our masterful director Conrad Newport, and a hugely talented creative team full of enthusiasm.”

Conrad says the production combines humour, warmth, and emotional depth, creating a distinctly New Zealand story that is at once entertaining and timely.

Local Library runs at Circa Theatre from the 25th of July to the 22nd of August. The team who have crafted and brought it to life are amongst Aotearoa’s most respected creators, artists, and performers, resulting in a polished “love letter to books, libraries, and the conversations they spark”, Circa marketing manager Jane Carruthers says.

“It’s also a reminder that friendship can be found in the most unexpected places.”
